event :: 2014 beaches arts and crafts show

6/17/2014

this past weekend i participated in the 30th annual beaches arts and crafts show located in the beautiful beaches neighbourhood at kew gardens park, toronto ... elyse and the rest of the folks at signatures shows did a great job ... we were all very lucky as the rain stayed away even though it was a little chilly (especially since i am writing this blog post during a thunderstorm in mississauga tonight) ...

i met some great people and excited to see a few familiar faces ... i had some great neighbours as well ... red thread design that sells beautiful children clothing ... and spahket who makes natural body products ... i also introduced my new series of pencil & mixed media drawings titled "forest of serendipity" ...

it was my first outdoor show and there was a lot to learn ... being creative and drawing or painting is something i love to do ... but learning the logistics of preparing for a show is a whole other story ... when i used to visit outdoor shows i never truly appreciated the time and effort that went into not just the products but the entire show ... i had to purchase a canopy tent which luckily was quite easy to set up ... then there was the problem of trying to park in a vibrant neighbourhood and dollying your items back and forth from the car to your booth location ... and as i mentioned earlier, had it rained it would have been another factor to consider ... did i mention i forgot to bring table cloths and chairs?  yes chairs!!

on day 1, i set up my booth pretty much the same way i set up my last indoor show ... i had my display with my prints on top of a table and my note cards and iphone cases laid out flat ... i didn't anticipate being able to have 2 opposite sides of the tent open and thought it would be a good idea to attract more traffic ... however that caused the set up to be a little awkward ... plus i couldn't figure out without investing a bunch of money how to hang my framed art up ... the above two photos is what the set up looked like on day 1 ...

by the end of day 1, i had more time to assess the situation and when we came in on day 2, we had a different floor plan in mind ... we set up the tables in an L-shape, allowing through traffic and we figured out how to hang some art using old chandelier chains ... i was really happy with how it turned out ... above is the set up on day 2 ... big difference huh? well you live and learn ... thank you for everyone who made it out and stopped by to chat or see my work!

Lynn's Lids was one of my neighbours at the spring OOAK show this past march ... she is a talented artist who specializes in hand knitted and felted creations ...  she was kind enough to feature a blog post about my artwork recently and i wanted to take this time to share with you her beautiful work ... her "sheepy dryer balls" are my favourite which not only are incredibly cute but green (as in it reduces dryer time) ...
Picture
she also makes beautiful hats, tea cosies and catnip balls!!!

Lynn also teaches needle felting classes in toronto and can be found on her website, blog, twitter, facebook, etsy, pinterest and instagram ...
